The art of Byzantine mosaics, originating in Ravenna, Italy, at the beginning of the 5th century, has remained unchanged over the centuries. This technique experienced a revival in 19th-century Florence. Each thread of brightly colored enameled glass is carefully cut and placed to form unique and distinctive designs. The creation of Byzantine mosaics is a painstaking process, now undertaken by a diminishing number of expert craftspeople.
