Byzantine Mosaic Cross made in Florence, Italy. Italian Artisans craft these exquisite pieces by using a traditional Florentine technique, which involves cutting the thin slices of Murano glass cane and placing each individual piece together into the gold-plated cross.
The art and technique of Byzantine mosaics have not changed since they were first made at the beginning of the 5th century in Ravenna, Italy. The process resumed and flourished again in the 19th century in Florence, Italy. Each thread of brightly colored enameled glass is cut and attached to another to form the original and distinctive designs. The painstaking work of creating Byzantine mosaics is limited by a diminishing number of expert craftspersons.
The pendant measures approximately 4.25" in length (excluding metal ring), 2.75" in width (the cross).
