The art and technique of Byzantine mosaics have remained unchanged since their origins in 5th-century Ravenna, Italy. This intricate craft saw a resurgence in 19th-century Florence. Each vibrant thread of enameled glass is carefully cut and placed to form unique and distinctive designs. The painstaking creation of Byzantine mosaics is now undertaken by a diminishing number of expert artisans.
