She taught me to simmer the sauce slowly, open egg cartons to be sure there are none broken, take care of myself and of the people I love. She showed me the importance of daily walks and the appreciation of fresh air. She taught me the joy of writing prose and keeping things simple. She was creative as a stage actress creating interesting, multi-dimensional characters. She was a photographer capturing moments in the world around her. She held tight to her Italian roots, she was my mother.
MOTHER, as defined by Websters dictionary is “a female parent”.
I would expand that definition to include my neighbor who took care of me while my parents were away when I was 6 years old, teaching me to to paint a bouquet of flowers; a painting that hangs in my home today. And my high school teacher Ms. Duane who believed in my abilities and encouraged my artful instincts in leather design and silversmithing.
Being a mom has been my greatest gift and joy in life. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to feed, guide and love my two wonderful children.
“Mother” represents a wide spectrum of women. Women who heal our wounds, who feed and inspire us, who love and fight for us and who make us smile.
